Southside Shopping Centre will be celebrating Black History Month this October with a vibrant line-up of events showcasing the creativity, culture and heritage within our community.
Unmissable events to add to your calendar:
- Listen to the uplifting rhythms of a live steel pan band on Saturday 3rd October
- Come and see our thought-provoking photography exhibition, on from 1st - 31st October, located in front of Waitrose in the Main Mall
- We want a big crowd and lots of applause for Pointe Black ballet school, who'll be performing twice on Saturday 17th October, at 1pm and 3.30pm in our Lower Mall
- Discover a diverse market showcasing Black-owned businesses and local makers, here all through October in our Lower Mall
Come and see our photography exhibition
Southside has partnered with artist and researcher Kay Rufai to bring his transformative S.M.I.L.E-ing Boys and S.M.I.L.E-ing Girls project to life.
As well as hosting the exhibition, we're proud to have partnered with Kay to bring the project to Ark Putney Academy, which saw the creative, research-led programme provide 27 young people with a safe space to explore identity, mental health, stereotypes, goals, and a sense of belonging.
These interactive sessions empowered young Black boys and girls to challenge societal stereotypes and foster unapologetic joy, with Kay capturing portraits of each of the students at the end of the sessions to celebrate their journeys and share their empowering narratives with the local community.

Our Black Culture Market is popping up in October, championing African and Caribbean brands all month long. Join us to explore products from handcrafted jewellery, natural skincare and haircare, gifts, home décor, and more, with all items created by talented black-owned businesses.
More than just ballet
Pointe Black ballet school, a non-profit community ballet company, is back with us once again and ready to share two performances with the local community right here in the centre. The shows promise to be interesting, as the dancers blend classical ballet with African and Caribbean influences.
We encourage the local community to come down on Saturday 17th October at 1pm and 3.30pm to witness these performances and share their support.
